There were around 8 million mobile end-users in Belgium at the end of Q1 2003, with a penetration rate of more than 76%.

Mobile Data Market

In the first half of 2003, around 82% of all Belgian mobile end-users were active SMS users.

According to Belgian operators, mobile data revenue accounted for approximately 15.7% of total revenue in the 1Q of 2003. It is projected that on average Belgian mobile end–users sent 54 SMS per month in the first half of 2003.

France

With more than 40.1 million subscribers in September 2003, France is one of the leading mobile markets in Europe. Mobile penetration reached 66.5% in the 1Q of 2003.

Mobile Data Market

In the 2Q of 2003 the total mobile data market increased by 68.2% compared to the second quarter of 2002.

In the 3Q of 2003, French mobile users sent more than 2 billion SMS messages, an average of 17.6 SMS per end-user per month and an increase of 35% compared to the same quarter in 2002.

In the full year 2002, 5.8 billion SMS were sent across all three French operators, around 12.4 SMS per end-user per month. This represents an increase of 40% compared to 7.4 SMS per end-user per month that were sent in 2001. 89% of all SMS sent in France in 2002 were person-to-person messages.

Mobile data use and trends

The most common use of mobile data services in France is for customization services: 45% of mobile data traffic is generated by the download of logos and ringtones

The French Mediamétrie survey shows how passionate young people are about customizing their phones:

  • 64% of 11 to 19year olds have already downloaded a ringtone
  • 54% have downloaded a logo
  • 40% have equipped their phone with a front screen

Germany

With more than 60 million mobile subscribers, Germany is the largest mobile market in Europe. The mobile penetration rate rose considerably over the last year to reach almost 75% in 2003.

German mobile operators launched MMS services in 2002. At present, one MMS is sent for every 1000 SMS, but operators estimate that by the end of 2004 one message out of every four will be an MMS and by the end of 2007 60% of all messages will be MMS.
